Eastleigh into last 16 after 4-1 replay victory

FA Trophy - 2nd Round Replay
Eastleigh produced their second consecutive 4-1 victory in their visitors territory in the space of ten days. Although a thoroughly deserved victory, a three-goal margin did slightly flatter The Spitfires.
Eastleigh kept the same side that had played in the first match of this Second Round F A Challenge Trophy tie forty-eight hours earlier. The home side were without their left back Mark Clyde who had been such a dominant figure in the opening fixture.
With a home tie waiting against Chasetown from the Division below that both of these sides compete in waiting for the victor of this tie; Worcester took an early lead. Danny Glover had already seen a shot from Neil Cartwright’s cross-saved by Gareth Barfoot in the fourth minute when Glover was rejoicing in the seventh minute. Crowding the Eastleigh rearguard Tom Thorley and Kevin O’Connor won reward for their determination when Mark Danks slipped the ball through to Glover who placed a side footed shot past Barfoot to give City the early lead.
Worcester were definitely in the ascendancy for the opening period with Eastleigh struggling to adapt to the conditions and the driving rain. On eighteen minutes Ross Bottomley was caught in possession leaving Matt Birley in on goal with the advancing Barfoot. Fortunately for Eastleigh Birley slipped the ball past Barfoot but also inches wide of the post.
Eastleigh began to settle and started asking more questions of the home side. They kept the home side defending in numbers for long periods. On twenty-seven minutes Richard Graham's free kick was cleared but the ball fell for Shaun McAuley who saw his effort deflected wide. Eight minutes later a Graham cross was headed on to the top of the net by Jamie Slabber.
On thirty-eight minutes Danny Smith's long ball from defence was flicked on by Slabber for McAuley to use his pace to get beyond the defence but his shot was pushed away by home teenage goalkeeper David Parton. Two minutes later Worcester had a chance when Barfoot palmed away a free kick from Thorley but Ryan Clarke could not keep his shot down and it went over the bar. It was not the best of opening halves for Eastleigh though.
The second half was a completely different story and Eastleigh suddenly looked at their determined best and wanting to win every ball. Tom Jordan’s header from a Smith cross three minutes in to the second period almost brought reward but just off target.
Eastleigh were in command - though not managing to create that many chances. On sixty-four minutes the equaliser did arrive. Barfoot took a free kick deep in the Eastleigh half finally falling for Tony Taggart who managed to squeeze a shot past Parton at the near post.
The next chance fell the way of Worcester on seventy-four minutes. Glover saw a shot saved by the legs of Barfoot, the ball arriving for Danks to fire goal ward but Smith was in the right position to clear off the line. But the game was opening up for both sides and it was Eastleigh that took the next goal.
On seventy-six minutes Pete Adeniyi having an excellent second half slipped the ball through a static Worcester defence for Slabber but the strikers shot was blocked. A minute later Taggart's corner was headed goalwards by Jordan, the ball was blocked and in a melee Adeniyi turned away taking acclaim for a second goal for Eastleigh with the assistant flagging to confirm the score.
Barfoot got his upper body behind a shot from Glover two minutes later to keep the advantage with Eastleigh. On eighty-five minutes Thorley's header from Simon Richman's corner was just wide, then a minute later Eastleigh broke away through a Worcester defence that had waved away caution and Richard Gillespie headed a Graham cross just wide.
In the final minute of the match Barfoot brought off a fine save to deny Danks an equaliser before Eastleigh could breath a sigh of relief in the second minute of stoppage time. Adeniyi was again involved in the action this time threading the ball through to Gillespie who laid the ball off to allow Taggart to fire home his second goal of the evening.
Another two minutes had been played when Eastleigh added a fourth. Gillespie gratefully accepted his goal delicately slipping the ball under Parton to complete the evening for Eastleigh.
