Match preview - Eastleigh v Weston-super-Mare

By Kieran James

Ian Baird’s Spitfires earned their first point of the season at home to Basingstoke Town last Tuesday in a game where Eastleigh saw much of the possession going their way.

On loan midfielder Callum McNish was the only change to the line up that failed to earn anything last Saturday away to Boreham Wood and it took thirty minutes before Eastleigh got their first goal of the season. Captain Daryl McMahon whipped in a cross for ex-Basingstoke striker Craig McAllister who headed home a bullet header, which was even too powerful for the defender on the line to stop.

With the Spitfires one nil up, they knew they needed at least another goal to secure the lead in the second half however unfortunately for Eastleigh, the visitors had a different idea. Matt Warner stepped up for a free kick from some thirty yards out and struck a powerful free kick past goalkeeper Jack Dovey to equalise for The Dragons with only twenty minutes to go.

Dale Binns had a promising debut after returning from his honeymoon for the last seven minutes of the game. The former Woking winger showed some pace and a promising debut for The Spitfires as the game finished 1-1 after much pressure from Eastleigh in the dying minutes.

Eastleigh now take on Weston-super-Mare at the Silverlake Stadium tomorrow (3pm kick off) in the Blue Square Bet South. The Seagulls have got off to similar start to the season as the Spitfires with a return of one point from their first two games.

Weston-super-Mare got a point at the start of the season at home to Hayes & Yeading however last Tuesday saw them lose away to Farnborough. Nic Ciardini scored a second half brace for the hosts and the Seagulls managed to pull one back in the dying minutes through Ross Stearn - but it wasn’t enough and Farnborough won 2-1.

The last time these two teams met was only four months ago at the Woodspring Stadium and the game ended 0-0 however the last time these two teams played at the Silverlake Stadium, Eastleigh won 2-1 with Jamie Slabber (now at Chelmsford) and Jordace Holder-Spooner (now at Basingstoke Town) both netting for the Spitfires. Chris Young scored the opener in that game for the Seagulls.

This is going to be a great game to watch so come on down to the Silverlake Stadium and roar on those Spitfires to their first win of the season!
